Turkish ENT history starts with that Civani Ananyan Bey was entrusted with ENT lecturing in 1878. Turkish ENT Science history, that started with exalting Şefik Pasha for head of the ENT department in the year 1890, in early 1900’s began to expand with communications with European countries and with opening of new ENT clinics. Even in the hard days corresponding to the decline of Ottoman Empire, World War I and foundation of new Turkiye, sinonasal and laryngeal surgeries besides otologic surgeries, ENT books on Turkish, publishes and presentations in international meetings were started to be performed.
Dr Sani Yaver and Dr Haydar İbrahim Aydar who attended to 1. World ENT Congress in 1928, Denmark came up with the idea of foundation of a Society to present Turkish ENT Discipline. At the end of two years on May 8th,1930 Turkish Oto-Rhino-Laryngology Collegium was founded by Ziya Nuri, İhya Salih İsanç, Sani Yaver, Ahmet Ata Olgaç and Haydar İbrahim Aydar who are not alive now. With the foundation of the collegium, the first president of whom is Ziya Nuri Pasha and the primary aim of whom is the development and improvement of Otorhinolaryngology in our country, organizing scientific meetings, academic sessions on regular base and participating in international meetings increased, communication with ENT Societies of foreign countries started. Unfortunately, this rise in ENT field blocked by World War II, in addition to hard economic conditions, international communications were minimized due to war in between European countries.
Owing to the intense work in and out of the country, on October 5th, 1951 “First National ENT Congress” assembled in Istanbul. In the opening statement declared by Prof Sani yaver, those words were spelled; “ In very close future, while I want to share my thankfulness and gratitude to unknown colleagues of mine who will donate the third step of maturation of our discipline which is the international ENT congress to scientific life of our country, I want to cherishingly mention the memories of members of our society for 21 years Ziya Nuri, Mahmut Nedim, Mükerrem Emin, İhsan Duydal, Said Naci Doğancı Kukulis all of whom passed away.
Two years later, on October 5th 1953, the Second National Otolaryngology meeting was held. Professor Ekrem Behcet Tezel, the President of the meeting, declared that their two main goals were to have participants from all around the country and from all around the World, as the previous meetings used to be restricted to Istanbul. 51 participants from Türkiye and 14 from around the World joined the 2nd International meeting. The recent status of our society shows that the goals declared in the 2nd national meeting by Professor Tezel were achieved much sooner than predicted.
Fourty years later, on 1993, the 15th International Meeting of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery was held in Türkiye . The president of the congress was Professor Orhan Sunar, and the meeting was held in Istanbul with 5500 participants. Following this spectecular meeting, The Turkish Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery Discipline has brought many international meetings to Türkiye , achieved numerous successes and has established a respected place in the international field.
